Google adds cycling routes to U.S. maps

Riders in 150 cities can now identify bike lanes, busy streets and off-road trails
Two-wheeled travelers across the U.S. got some good news today: Google is adding bicycling directions to its popular Maps site. Now, riders in 150 cities will be able to identify bike lanes, quieter streets and off-road trails before heading out on their commutes or pleasure rides.

“I just tried [Google Bike] out this morning mapping a route in New York City,” said I Bike T.O. blogger Herb van den Dool. The year-round cyclist liked Google’s colour-coding — bike paths as dark green, bike lanes as lighter green and recommended routes are dotted green.

So far, Google has only included US cities. But since the best cycling cities are on other continents, it’s only a matter of time before Montreal is mapped for all.
